New, Useful, Feasible - Evaluate ideas, prototypes or strategies

The NUF evaluation is a decision making technique used to evaluate a set of options (ideas, prototypes, new products, market segments) along three criteria:

  • New: is it new? Is it innovative?
  • Useful: does it solve an important problem or fulfil a real need?
  • Feasible: is it feasible? Do we have the opportunity, the skills, money or time to do it?

Then, based on the evaluation results, the team will try to find ways to improve the different options.

1. Evaluate the options

Individually, take the time to evaluate each one of the listed alternatives along three criteria:

  • New: is it new? Is it innovative?
  • Useful: does it solve an important problem or fulfil a real need?
  • Feasible: is it feasible? Do we have the opportunity, the skills, money or time to do it?

You can rate each alternative from [0] to [9], for example for the New criteria:

  • [0] Already done, the idea has been existing since a long time...
  • [1] Not really new, some similar ideas do exist but there is also a little originality
  • [3] Quite new and might offer new possibilities
  • [9] Very innovative, totally unseen...

You can also comment on the alternative to capture your opinion.

Note to the facilitator: you need to prepare the session by adding the different options to evaluate. You can give them a title, a slight description and attach an illustration.

2. Analyse results and improve the options

Let's have a look at the results and see how we can improve the options!

1) Do we agree on the evaluation?

Click on each alternative, and open the Rating by users:

  • Is there a consensus between us?
  • If not, why?

2) How can you improve each idea to make it more innovative, more useful and easier to implement?

  • Discuss improvement ideas
  • Capture each ideas in the relevant sections inside each card

3. Reflect on the session & decide on the next steps

Congratulations, this is the end of our session.

Let's take the time to reflect on our discussions and decide on the next steps:

  • Do we want to take the time to improve one or several options?
  • Should we take a final decision on one of the options?
